Not making money with affiliate marketing?

Not making money with affiliate marketing in 2023? Here is what you might be doing wrong

Not making money with affiliate marketing? Don’t fret, there’s still hope.

Since the dawn of the internet people have been experimenting with various methods of making money online, from reselling stuff being the basic one that started it all to providing a wide variety of services to people on the other side of the globe.

It is a dream come true to the modern man to be able to wake up in the morning, brew a cup of hot coffee or some tea and watch how other people commute to work in the rain and snow while you sit in the comfort of your home and work from a laptop…

More often than not the dream comes crashing down in front of you when you realize that working from home like this requires a skill that is most likely complicated and not a lot of people have it and that this luxury is not up for grabs by everyone.

But that’s where affiliate marketing comes in! This type of work doesn’t require a special skill or fancy equipment, only your time, information (that the internet is full of), and an idea. People considering becoming an affiliate marketer know that the internet is full of information about every single thing based around affiliate marketing… There are endless myths, hacks, tips, success stories, enormous fails, and case studies based around this model but the baseline is – we want to make money while we sleep!

Affiliate marketing

And affiliate marketing allows you to do that! If done right, you can make money while sleeping, in the mountains, swimming, or even doing some other side work.

On the other hand, if not done right, that’s where all the bad stories come from.

So, let’s abbreviate how not to end up in that alley and actually make your dream come true and make money while we sleep!

Niche problems

One of the main things to get sorted out at the start of your affiliate marketing journey is the niche in which you want to operate. Do you want to work in health and fitness? Or maybe you find yourself to be passionate about electronics? Whatever niche you choose, make sure that you have some knowledge of the matter.

The problem comes if the niche is too competitive and you can’t swim to the top. The more competitive a niche is, the harder it will be for you to remain profitable working in it.

One of the ways to remain competitive against others is to be up to date with others and the topics in the chosen niche. People oftentimes find it hard to learn and read every day and update their work and that results in failure.

Perfect niche

If you find yourself struggling with the competition, it’s best to bail out while you haven’t lost a lot of money. Sometimes it’s best to confess to yourself that you just can’t find your way around in the chosen niche and that competitors are better than you.

Another problem that often comes up is not competition, but the buyers. Basically, the niche doesn’t have enough demand to follow through with the supply. With the inflow of new marketers in the niche, it gets even worse. So the tip on how to evade this demand trap is to scout the niche as much as you can and see if there is enough buyer intent incorporated so that it can fulfill your new supply.

Website problems

Long gone is the era when you could survive with a low-quality website riddled with affiliate links and products praying for that click on the link just so you could get paid.

Today websites need to look modern, and convincing, to date, all of that counts for the user’s experience and increases the probability of them clicking your affiliate links. A good-looking, great-feeling, and trustworthy website is a must-have if you even want to set a foot in the profitable affiliate marketing world.

Luckily for you, there are a lot of services that provide a nearly drag-and-drop website builder where you can create your perfect website in just a few minutes and with no headaches. Wix, WordPress, or even Shopify (if you want to build a shop) are all great tools for a killer website!

Content problems

A good affiliate website today needs to look a lot like a blog. You need to have a mix of useful tips, interesting stories, personal experiences, and well-built-in affiliate links if you want to attract people. If you’re expecting people to stay on your page, let alone click on your links, you’re going to need a lot more than a few tables or comparison pictures.

Link problems

This one is surely a no-brainer but you should make a habit of checking on your links from time to time. They might not necessarily lead to 404 pages, although links leading to out-of-stock or discontinued products will yield the same results as a 404 page.

Activity problems

The key to a successful affiliate site is having sales.

The key to having a lot of sales is having a lot of traffic.

The key to having a lot of traffic is being ranked high for your keywords on Google.

The key to having a good Google ranking, in addition to all of the basic SEO and quality indicators, is having an active site. Google loves fresh content, and they love sites that keep up to date.

Yes, it may not be as interesting or as blood-pumping as some other stuff, but if you want to run a successful affiliate website, you need to dish out fresh content on a regular basis.

Lack of funding

You know the saying, you need to spend money to make money. If you want to increase traffic on your website, and as we know traffic = sales, you need to pay for advertising. And if you’re paying for quality traffic it raises the chances of getting conversions from them and helps you to make a profit after the advertising spend.

Too many advertising problems

This should’ve been an easy equation.

Advertising = traffic

Traffic = sales

So common sense would deduct an equation that would say

More advertising = more sales!

Hold up. It may sound all that easy but it’s not. If you want to want to be really successful with a website you need to put a bit more thought into it and less money throwing. Yes, spending more money on advertising will increase traffic, but the results will start to diminish with an increase in ad spending if it’s not followed through with more quality content, website optimization, making better offers… the more traffic your website gets, the more attention it will require if you really want to make the big bucks!

Affiliate marketing really is a good way to make money, but you can’t fall into the trap of thinking that it’s going to be easy. It takes a lot of time and effort to find a good niche, set up a compelling website, build a rank and a readership, maintains that readership, and turn a profit. You can use the money to accelerate some of these steps, but not all of them, not if you want to make a significant profit.
